The Prague Exhibition – Mucha Museum

The exhibition covers an area of 500m2. It is divided into seven parts. Each part contains a certain grouping of works. In the end, you will watch a documentary film about Mucha. The film is basically about his life.

1st part of the exhibition: Decorative panels

This part consists of four or two groups of paintings. The first work of this section is called Four Times of the Day from 1896. Some other artworks are named, for example, Four Flowers or Dance .

The art is based on the principle of the four arts cycle. You can see for yourself what Mucha wanted to express with these works. These works feature nature related to women.

Part 2 of the exhibition: Paris posters

Paris posters were created during the 1990s in Paris and are among the world’s most famous works. Thanks to these works, the artist created a new decorative style. For example, you may be familiar with the painting called Gismonda.

An interesting story is also connected to his work and due to this coincidence, Mucha became famous in France. It was a job for the famous actress Sarah Bernhardt. She needed to create a poster during the Christmas time for a threatre performance. In addition, it was very urgent and the poster needed to be done very quickly. So she called to a printer Lemercier, who owned the printing works. Alfons Mucha worked in this printing company and was present during the phone call from Sarah. Since the printer’s artists were on vacation, the printer Lemercier turned to Mucha, who took the responsibility for the work. Undoubtedly, he created a poster that got the French excited! Sarah Bernhardt even immediately offered Mucha a contract to create stage costumes and posters!

Other works that belong to this section may be known under names such as Médée, Hamlet or, for example, the Zodiac. However, more posters with their own stories belong in this section.

3rd part of the exhibition: Documents Décoratifs

The set of 72 Documents Décoratifs was drawn by Mucha with pencil. He wanted to design a kind of template for craftsmen to create objects that shape the home environment. The items were primarily for the apartment, such as furniture, but also jewellery or perhaps dishes. The designs are drawn in a naturalistic and abstract spirit.

4th part of the exhibition: Czech posters

After 1910, Mucha returned to his homeland with the ambition to appeal to the local people with his art. He, therefore, decides to create posters. Of course, Czech posters differ from French ones, but they have gained the same popularity as in France. The artist depicts colourful folklore in the form of beautiful Slavic girls in costumes and Sokol associations.

5th part of the exhibition: Paintings

In addition to posters, thanks to which we could also think of Mucha as a graphic artist, he painted beautiful tempera or oil paintings. In the spirit of paintings, he focused more on portrait studies. A well-known work of art from this category can be, for example, TheProphetessr from 1896.

6th part of the exhibition: Drawings and pastels

In this part of the exhibition, you have the opportunity to see Mucha’s precise works, some of them painted in pencil. In the picture below the text, you can see the design for stained-glass window in the St Vitus’ Cathedral in Prague. Note the detailed and miniature elements Mucha focused on in this case.

7th part of the exhibition: Studio and Photographs

The last part of the exhibition consists of a photographic collection of models from the 90s of the 18th century, which was exhibited in the Paris studio of Rue du Val-de-Grâce. The models in the photographs often pose in the same way as the painted women in Mucha’s posters. In the studio, Mucha experienced visits from various famous artists, musicians and writers.
