October Events: Prague and the estabilishment of Czechoslovakia

In October, we commemorate the establishment of the Czechoslovakia. You can explore the detailed account of this day in “Historical Prague,” describing how it unfolded in 1918.

On October 28, 1918, marking the anniversary of Czechoslovak statehood, Prague was at the centre of transformative events reshaping Central Europe. This date is deeply emblematic of a pivotal moment in Czechoslovak history.

Prague on the day of Czechoslovakia’s founding

Throughout Czech history, Prague consistently served as a significant centre and the residence of Czech monarchs. However, after World War I led to the dissolution of Austria-Hungary, the Czech nation realized its long-cherished dream of independence.

On the day of Czechoslovakia’s founding, in the heart of Prague’s Wenceslas Square, citizens passionately expressed their support. The historic National Museum balcony hosted the solemn proclamation, symbolizing a return to freedom and independence after centuries under foreign rule.

With Czechoslovakia’s formal establishment, Prague became its capital, evolving into a political, cultural, and economic nucleus. Key institutions, including the parliament, strengthened their status.

Prague played a crucial role in shaping the constitution and Czechoslovak institutions. Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk, a prominent politician and intellectual, became the first president.

Czechoslovakia’s founding in 1918 remains a significant historical milestone. October 28th is celebrated as a national holiday, and Prague remains its capital. The city reflects this event through landmarks, museums, and annual commemorations.

f you are interested in the history of Prague or want to learn more about the capital, we are happy to arrange a walking tour Prague for you. The guide will introduce you to, for example, The architectural beauty in Prague  or the history of the city of Prague.

Strahov Monastery in Prague

Royal Canonry of Premonstratensians at Strahov

Prague is renowned for its rich history and architectural treasures. Among these historical gems lies the Strahov Monastery, perched on the Hradčany Hill, not far from Prague Castle. This monastery stands as one of the most significant cultural and historical landmarks in Prague, offering visitors a unique glimpse into the past of the Czech Republic.

Founded in 1140 by Czech Prince Vladislav II and Benedictine monks, Strahov Monastery became a centre of culture, education, and religious life in the Czech Kingdom during the Middle Ages. The monastery also played a crucial role in preserving and disseminating knowledge and the wealth of its library, undergoing numerous transformations since then. Today, you can explore two main exhibitions: the library and the art gallery.

Strahov Monastery in Prague: The Library

The monastery’s library houses valuable books and manuscripts, including the unique Strahov Gospel. It boasts over 200,000 volumes, including rare manuscripts and first editions. Visitors can admire beautiful frescoes on the ceiling and historical furniture. The library is a captivating place for anyone who loves books and history, ranking among the most valuable in Europe.

Strahov Monastery in Prague: The Art Gallery

The Strahov Monastery’s art gallery is another treasure worth visiting. Here, you can view a vast collection of paintings and graphics by Czech and German masters, including works by renowned artists such as Petr Brandl and Karel Škréta. During World War II, the monastery was occupied by Nazis who stored part of their loot there. After the war, the monastery was nationalized and used by the communist regime. Following the fall of communism, it was returned to the Benedictines and restored for religious purposes. The art gallery is an ideal place for art and history enthusiasts.

Admission

For visitors who want to fully immerse themselves in the Strahov Monastery experience, we offer two types of admission. The first option is a self-guided tour, allowing you to explore the monastery at your own pace. The second option includes a guided tour, providing deeper insights into the history and art of this place. Our guides will share fascinating stories and provide context for the displayed artworks.

The performing orchestra will play the most famous musical works of Czech and foreign composers for its listeners. The space inside the church is not large, so the listeners can clearly hear the musical performance.

Concerts are held every Tuesday and Saturday. However, the price depends on the seat (front and back). Find the church of St. Martin in the Wall at the address Martinská 8 in the Old Town. You can learn more in the link Classical Concerts in Prague.

Concert in Prague’s Klementin, baroque library and astronomical tower: Concerts of Classical Music in Prague

The elegant premises of Prague’s Klementin are another option for visiting a classical music concert. The performers play a set of compositions by Vivaldi: The Four Seasons. However, Klementinum is worth a visit in itself – you can see the baroque library set in historical premises or the astronomical tower. The library is referred to as the most beautiful library in the world and houses approximately 20,000 volumes of books. Subsequently, the astronomical tower offers a breathtaking view of Prague from up to 68 meters high.

The concerts are held at irregular intervals, so if you are interested, we will contact you regarding the date. In addition, we will also provide you with discounted entrance fees to the Baroque Library and the Astronomical Tower. More information about the Concerts in Klementinum can be found at this link.
