Brewery Prague

In this historical complex of the Staropramen Visitor Centre in Prague’s Smíchov, we will be happy to guide those interested in the history of the brewery and offer a beer tasting.

Josef Paspa himself, as one of the most important figures in the past of Staropramen, will guide the guests through the history. Although Paspa was not the founder, he contributed to the modernization of the Staropramen brewery. He introduced innovative technological procedures. Embedded in people’s minds the slogan “Staropramen consists of water, pipes and fools!” The Staropramen brewery was founded in 1869 with Czech pride, employing Czechs and preferring Czech partners. At that time, trade in Europe revolved mainly around Germany.

People started to love Staropramen, brewers came up with new recipes. The basic raw materials for beer production are water, hops, malt and yeast. They produced their own yeast in Smíchov. Later, in 1900, they started promoting and distributing their yeast to other breweries.

Staropramen flourished towards the future. Of course, it must be said that the wartime period was not an easy time, as it was for any other company. But he stood firm in everything. Even before World War 2, it became the largest brewery in Czechoslovakia! During World War 2, brewers proudly stood up for their brewery. When the Germans came up with a plan to confiscate our new still brewhouse, the brewers let it “disappear” to save it. It was clear to them that the brewhouse is the core of the entire brewery. So they just hid it behind the wall with no access.

If you are interested in how the brewery coped with the communist era, entering the global market, and how it is doing today, we cannot recommend anything other than buying a ticket to the Staropramen Visitor Centre!

The family of Alfons Mucha, the Czech art nouveau artist, decided to lend the works to those who are interested. Now you can see them in Prague.

Art Nouveau is an artistic style that arose at the turn of the 19th to the 20th century. Art nouveau style can be recognized by bold colours with a pastel touch and monotony. It often depicts human or animal bodies and nature, especially flowers and leaves. Other artists belong to this category are, for example, Gustav Klimt, Josef Fanta and Émile Gallé.

The Mucha Museum covers an area of 500 m2 and is divided into seven parts. Each section focuses on a particular type of art that Mucha created. At the end of the exhibition, you will also watch a film about the artist to get to know his personal life in addition to his works and artistic life.

You will get there again from the closest metro station Hradčanská, or you can go from the city centre through Pařížská Street. Letná Park is also a lovely place for doing summer sports. Moreover, a special thing about this park is the beautiful and wide view of Prague. Above all, this view is one of the best view spots in the city. If you are headed to Stalin Plaza from the city centre to see the view, you will have to beat the stairs up! The viewpoint is next to a giant metronome. At this place used to stand a statue of Stalin, which was removed in 1962. In 1991 was installed here this huge metronome. The view is worth it!

Up to the Prague Castle through the Lesser Town and right to the medieval restaurant – tips on what to visit in Prague

If you want to enjoy the busy city, we have for you a tip for a walk through the city centre. You will not even miss the Charles Bridge. Go up to Prague Castle to see the view of the centre of Prague. On your way back, take a seat in the medieval restaurant U krále Brabantského right under the Prague Castle.

Your walk through the Old Town can begin at the Lesser Town right away when you get off the metro. From here, walk towards the Charles Bridge.
The other option is, for example, to go from New Town through Charles Street. This street is full of small shops with souvenirs or food! On the other side of the Vltava river, you will reach Malostranské Square. From here, you are almost at the Prague Castle. This place is also one of the best view spots in Prague. We recommend visiting this place late in the afternoon or almost at night. Not so many tourists will be there. You can continue to the complex of the Prague Castle and see, for instance, the St. Vitus Cathedral or go through the Golden Lane. The entrance to the Golden Lane is free from 4 pm.

After the walk, take the stairs down and visit the medieval restaurant U krále Brabantského with a show! We offer advantageous prices.
